Why should we do Core and Stretch Work?

As well as most of us sitting hunched over desks at work or steering wheels when we're driving, cyclists sit hunched over the handlebars hammering out up to 5,000 revolutions per hour. As well as causing bad posture the hamstrings and hip flexors shorten which can cause lower back problems, hinder pedal stroke efficiency, reduce power output and can restrict a good aerodynamic position. The impact of running, especially when you're older, can cause many niggly injuries that can easily be avoided by regular stretching. A strong core can help stabilize the pelvis and will make you a more efficient runner. Although swimming is a low impact sport, good technique relies on an individual being flexible enough to establish a streamlined position and have ankles flexible enough to manage some sort of leg kick!
